Echoes of Excellence: Speaker Highlights from the Africa E-Market Conference

Dr. Joan Ngunnzi Mwende: Reigniting African Trade with Pride and Purpose
Dr. Joan Ngunnzi Mwende lit up the 3rd Africa E-Market Export Conference with a message that was bold, emotional, and unforgettable. She challenged Africa to see exports not just as business—but as a symbol of African pride, African products, for African people.
Her core message? Export is empowerment. It’s how we transform lives, tell our stories through products, and build an economy we can own. She urged the continent to make intra-African trade seamless, digital, and driven by community. Every product, she said, carries emotion—our culture, our resilience, our brilliance.
Quoting Uganda’s historic 1879 Caesarean section, she reminded us that innovation is in our DNA. Her closing call?
Let’s spark ideas, build partnerships, and believe in the African dream together.
Dr. Mwende didn’t just speak—she reignited belief.

Twists, Turns, and Returns: A Roadmap for Africa’s Trade Awakening
Mazi Dr. Sam Ohuabunwa’s address at the 3rd Africa E-Market Export Exhibition was a bold reminder: Africa cannot afford to be a spectator in global trade.
He framed Africa’s journey with three words—Twists, the systemic hurdles like fragmented markets and policy misalignment; Turns, the timely shifts such as AfCFTA and growing youth innovation; and Returns, the immense benefits waiting if we trade with purpose—wealth, stability, and global respect.
He urged leaders, entrepreneurs, and institutions to unshackle from colonial trade patterns and invest in practical intra-African commerce. In his words, “Africa must trade or fade.”
The message? Enough dialogue—it’s time to do the deals.

Intra-African Trade: Navigating Challenges, Embracing Opportunities
The Minister’s message at the 3rd Africa E-Market Export Exhibition was clear and powerful: Africa’s trade future hinges on overcoming obstacles and seizing opportunities.
The Minister highlighted the three core dynamics shaping Africa’s trade evolution: Challenges, including infrastructure gaps and policy fragmentation; Opportunities, driven by initiatives like AfCFTA, digital solutions, and the rising wave of youth innovation; and Growth, where purposeful trade leads to prosperity, stability, and regional leadership.
The Minister called for a renewed focus on practical actions—ensuring Africa’s commitment to intra-African trade becomes more than just a vision. It’s time to move beyond discussions and transform potential into real results.

Facilitating Legitimate Trade: Customs at the Heart of Africa’s Growth
In a detailed and passionate delivery, AC PO ITA, representing the Nigeria Customs Service, spotlighted the pivotal role of customs in driving legitimate trade across Africa.
She emphasized that customs is not just about control—but about facilitation, ensuring smooth movement of goods while maintaining security and compliance. Drawing from the Revised Kyoto Convention and the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement, she explained how modern customs practices like risk-based controls, authorized economic operator programs, and digital clearance processes are reshaping border trade.
Key challenges such as regulatory bottlenecks, insecurity, and fragmented systems were acknowledged, but she urged that with better coordination, Africa’s trade can shift from potential to performance.
Her message was clear:
Africa must promote only legitimate, rule-based trade—and customs is the bridge between policy and prosperity.

Twists to Returns: Unblocking Africa’s Intra-Trade Potential
From Uganda’s trade frontline, Okello Richard delivered a sharp and honest assessment: Africa’s trade challenges are common—but so are the solutions.
Representing Uganda’s Ministry of Trade, he traced the continent’s integration journey—from COMESA and EAC to AfCFTA—highlighting that protocols and policy are in place, but practical obstacles remain. Key among them: poor transport infrastructure, restrictive regulations, fragmented markets, and inconsistent product standards.
He drew from Uganda’s recent experience under the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative, calling for aggregators to help small producers meet quality, quantity, and consistency requirements. He also pushed for a mutual recognition system for labeling and packaging, especially across language zones, citing challenges in fulfilling Uganda’s bilateral dairy export deal with Algeria.
His core argument?
Trade works best when infrastructure, standards, and financing align. Without rail, reliable logistics, and harmonized certification, even the best agreements stall.
His message was direct: If Africa wants returns, it must straighten the twists—together.

Africa’s Governance and Displacement Challenges: Insights from Dr. Matlotleng Matlou
Dr. Matlotleng Matlou’s presentation addressed Africa’s governance issues and the rising displacement crisis. He highlighted disparities in governance, with some nations excelling while others, like South Africa, face declines. He pointed out that colonial borders still divide many African nations, complicating stability.
Urbanization and overcrowded cities add to the strain, with insufficient infrastructure and rising unemployment. Climate change, too, intensifies displacement, forcing millions from their homes due to floods, droughts, and desertification.
Dr. Matlou stressed that regional cooperation, like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), is key to overcoming these challenges and securing a better future for Africa.
